The Company we Keep

matpudada@gmail.com

We are, in many ways, a summation of our experiences, the people we encounter, and the company we choose to keep. The belief that one can rise above their circumstances is often rooted in exposure—exposure to better stories, higher standards, and lives lived with intention.

Life is a mosaic of intricate details, and who we surround ourselves with shapes the texture of that mosaic. When we consistently engage with ignorance, recklessness, or mediocrity, we begin to absorb those traits, often unconsciously. But when we walk alongside people of integrity, wisdom, discipline, and depth, we inherit their virtues through proximity. Character, after all, is contagious.

Why am I writing this?

Because too often, we underestimate the power of our associations. We entertain certain relationships not out of alignment, but out of habit, loneliness, or lack of awareness. We allow people into our lives without fully understanding the imprint they leave on our identity.

Being surrounded by women of character, grace, and discernment has taught me that I no longer identify with certain narratives. I’ve outgrown perspectives that once felt familiar. My greatest achievement by association has been character refinement. There are things I will not say, and choices I will not make—not because I lack temptation, but because I carry the weight of representation. I am a reflection of the people and places that shaped me. I cannot afford to dishonor them with carelessness or compromise.

Character building is not optional—it is essential. To neglect it is to invite chaos into your journey, and that chaos will eventually reveal the gaps in your foundation.

So choose wisely. Surround yourself with people who embody integrity, discipline, composure, and clarity of thought. Be intentional about who you allow into your space, and discerning about the access you grant. Access is not neutral—it means someone receives a part of you and leaves behind a part of themselves.

Choose your battles with wisdom. Never underestimate the impact of your choices or the strength of your opponent. Life has a way of circling back to remind you of what you tolerated, what you ignored, and what you allowed.

In conclusion, let the company you keep reflect the journey you are building—not just the moment you’re in. Let it speak to your future, your values, and your becoming.
